The Client
Lupin is the seventh largest generic pharmaceutical company in the world and is amongst the fastest growing pharmaceutical corporations. The company is involved in cutting-edge research and works in the Generics Research, Advanced Drug Delivery Systems, Intellectual Property Management, Novel Drug Discovery and Development, and Biotechnology Research domains.
The Requirement
Being in the pharmaceuticals business that is highly dependent on research and development, it is extremely vital for Lupin to protect its innovations. Although new age technologies have simplified the research process, they have also introduced newer ways that could lead to information breaches and theft of intellectual property. This prompted Lupin’s decision to look for a solution to make all employees aware of the information security measures they need to adhere to. The underlying business benefit was of course to protect the company’s information assets and maintain its competitive edge.
The Challenge
The inputs provided by Lupin were limited to a 16-page booklet with the policies shown as a bulleted list. The SKILLDOM design team therefore had little to work with, except for the client brief that the course had to be way more engaging than bullet points. Another challenge was the fact that the content was pretty ‘dry’. Creating interest in such content for a typical adult learner wasn’t something a run-of-the-mill eLearning course could achieve. Lupin needed an eLearning solution that could address these challenges.
The Solution
After analyzing the content, SKILLDOM team deliberated and came up with a custom eLearning solution that not only fulfilled Lupin’s requirements but also took the learning to a completely new level.
- Game-based Learning: Using game-based learning approach, team SKILLDOM designed the eLearning course as an engaging game. This game had two worlds—the world where Lupin employees live and work (and where information security breaches could take place), and a parallel world where Kavach, a ‘shield’ that ensures information security at Lupin. The shield protects Lupin with an energy cover that is powered by Lupin employees adhering to the information security policies.
- Designing for the Learners: To make the learning engaging and interactive, team SKILLDOM developed a mini-game. To ensure that the mini-game enhanced the learning and mimicked the actual workplace to a higher degree, team SKILLDOM went to the Lupin office in Mumbai and took photographs. This required extensive preparations as the team needed to be sure of the exact way the mini-game interactivities were to be shown. For this, we designed detailed visual storyboards for all the scenes planned.
- Highly Customized Scenarios: The scenes in the mini-game depicted real-life situations any Lupin employee could face in the office premises and even outside (for example, at an airport). The game was to identify the information security breaches in the given back ground within a specified time frame.
- Non-LMS Deployment: Instead of on an LMS, Lupin wanted to deploy this course on the company Intranet portal. This required the Lupin technology team to don the consulting hat and provide a highly customized solution.
The Impact
The result was a truly engaging course that not only met Lupin’s needs in the given budget and timelines, but also gave the target audience an eLearning experience like never before.
